PORTRAIT ARTIST

My name is Warren.
I’m an artist from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. People often ask how long I’ve been drawing and I tell them that I picked up a crayon when I was a kid and never really put it down. Its just a thing that I’ve always done. I guess I’ve always been aspiring to be an artist to some degree. Maybe one day I’ll get there. I grew up an 80s and 90s kid , so I was really inspired by cartoons like GI Joe, Transformers, Robotech and a lot of Warner/ Disney. I also really liked Heavy Metal Magazine cover art.
The list is huge in terms of who and what inspired me to keep drawing so I won’t bore you with it all. I will say that I spent a lot of time ripping off comic art. I think that’s a pretty common thing for most young people in terms of places to start. I was lucky enough to land a tattoo apprenticeship back in the early 00’s and tattooed up until about 2019.
Most of what you see in the galleries here are pieces that I did on the side while I was tattooing. I work with mostly 8b pencil (mars lumo), an assortment of blending materials and occasionally prismacolor color pencil. Outside of that not much else. Maybe the occasional 2b or Hb graphite pencil if needed. I have zero post secondary education or background in art. All of this is just from me picking something up and applying it until I feel like I’ve got a fairly good grasp on it. Mostly tips and tricks from colleagues and a lot of crumpled up paper and pulling out of ones own hair. Also a lot of sleepless nights, coffee and bloodshot eyes.
The dream is to be able to get back to being a career artist and make a living selling art. I’d like to continue to do this , but also be able to fund the ability to explore other mediums. Who knows where it could take me? Maybe I’ll get into some Bob Ross type shit… that could be fun. Or end up with a Legion of clients that want me to paint flowers in vases or fruit in bowls or whatever…. either way, I just want to draw because it’s pretty much the only thing that I don’t suck at. Enjoy!
